The Shamus Award recognises the outstanding achievements in private eye fiction each year. The major categories that are awarded each year cover Best PI Novel, Best First PI Novel and Best Paperback Original Novel. Listed below are the links that will take you to the list of the winner and nominees in each of the three major categories for each year.
The Shamus Award was born from the Private Eye Writers of America (PWA) and were first awarded in 1982. For the first three years the awards were given for Best PI Hardcover and Best Original PI Paperback as well as The Eye Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1983 the Best PI Short Story Category was added and then in 1985 the Best First PI Novel Category was added.
The Shamus Award is of particular relevance to me as a lover of the hardboiled genre because the private investigator plays such a pivotal role in the majority of books and series. Anyone who is looking for a place to start would do very well to browse through the titles and authors that have been listed here. There is also an opportunity to buy the books which should help you start or add to your reading collection.
